2012 Distinguished Alumni Award  from the University of Iowa

“Tanna Frederick is a rising movie star whose drive and determination have benefited the University of Iowa and the charitable causes she holds dear. Thankful for a UI experience that prepared her for a successful acting career in Hollywood—where she’s starred in many acclaimed plays and films—Frederick has given back to the Department of Theatre Arts in myriad ways, most notably through a student scholarship. A true supporter of the Hawkeye state, Frederick also founded the Iowa Independent Film Festival in her hometown of Mason City. Beyond the arts, she’s an avid surfer who co-founded Project Save Our Surf in Santa Monica, California, which raises money to preserve threatened coastline, as well as provide clean drinking water to those who need it.”

Celebrity actor Tanna Frederick came to California green off the bus from Iowa and not knowing what to expect, but instead of letting Hollywood dictate who she should be and what she should do with her life, she redefined her self, became a surfer, and created Project Save Our Surf (S.O.S).

During the past few years Frederick found herself enmeshed in the world of acting, starring in movies like “Hollywood Dreams,” (2006) “Queen of the Lot,” (2008) and her current project, “M Word,” co-starring Frances Fisher.

Frederick’s passion for acting, surfing, and “adrenaline type sports,” is quickly gaining notoriety and she has attracted a stream of like-minded Hollywood actors, pro-surfers, and celebrities with similar concerns about the ocean and the environment.

Native Iowans planting new film project seeds

DES MOINES – Iowa hasn’t exactly been heaven for filmmakers the past two years.

A scandal in the state’s best-in-the-nation film tax-credit incentive program shut down the program in September 2009. That sent many would-be moviemakers, investors and proposed projects scrambling for safer havens outside Iowa.

Meanwhile, state prosecutors and financial watchdogs honed in on possible wrongdoing in the program where almost

$32 million in state tax credits were granted to 22 film companies – $25.6 million that State Auditor David Vaudt claimed to be issued improperly.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) — Efforts are under way to revitalize Iowa’s film industry after a scandal over the state’s film tax credit program shut it down in 2009 and sent moviemakers and investors looking elsewhere.

Some film advocates hope to rekindle the industry in Iowa, which is known for “Field of Dreams,” ”Bridges of Madison County” and “Twister,” The Gazette (http://bit.ly/o0Fd01 ) reported Monday.

One initiative is Project Cornlight, which aims to develop Iowa-based films and other projects showcasing Iowa talent and produce at least one independent film in Iowa a year.

Read our exclusive interview with stage and independent film actress Tanna Frederick, who’s set to reprise her role of Pandora Isaacs in the upcoming film ‘Just 45 Minutes from Broadway.’ She originally portrayed Pandora in the stage version in 2009 at the Edgemar Center for the Arts in Los Angeles. The film follows Pandora as she has to move back in with her parents, who are both successful stage actors, after her latest relationship ends. However, her sister Betsy has no interest in the family business, and moves to start her own life. Frederick discusses with us, among other things, why she wanted to reprise her role in the film, and what she finds so appealing about theater.
